Ahmedabad: Gujarat police conducted raids across 17 jails in the State yesterday. The raids were conducted in the jails across the state after Harsh Sanghvi’s meeting at the DGP office yesterday. Police has recovered 40 packets of marijuana from a jail inmate at Sabarmati Jail. During the raids a latest modus operandi has come to light. It has been also found that the jail personnel are providing mobiles to inmates. In addition, the raids are being conducted to check for any illegal activities inside the jails and to ensure the inmates are getting facilities they are entitled to as per the law.
1,700 police personnel involved in the operation
The raids are being conducted in central jails in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and other cities as well in sub-jails. As many as 1,700 police personnel, including officers, are involved in the operation that began Friday night, State Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay said.
Marijuana and Hashish recovered from Lajpore jail
Police officials cracked at Lajpore Jail of Surat. They conducted a search operation for any illegal activities going on in the jail. During the operation police recovered mobile phones, marijuana and hashish pads. Reacting to police action the inmates started vandalizing the jail. In some barracks, the prisoners broke tube lights and threw utensils. Subsequently, with the additional police force the raids were conducted till 5 am today.
According to the sources, jail personnel were providing the facility of mobile phones to the inmates. They were recovering the charges from them for the same. Total 26 mobiles were recovered from the jails, sources said.
Live telecast at state police control center
The police personnel involved in the operation wore body-worn cameras and the entire process was live telecast in the state police control center at Gandhinagar where Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, DGP Vikas Sahay and other senior officers were present.
